About Handball

Handball is a game that combines aspects of both basketball and soccer to create a unique sport defined by fast-paced action on the court. As with basketball, the goal of the game is to dribble a ball down a court. Gameplay similar to soccer has players shooting the ball into a goal when they reach the opposing team’s net.

History

Handball has European roots, and the first game of handball that was played using modern rules took place in Denmark in the late 1800s. International handball games between European countries were first played in 1925, and teams for women were formed by 1930. It is estimated that over 15 million people around the world play handball today.

Rules

Handball teams consist of six outfielders and one goalie. Handball courts are 40 meters long and 20 meters wide, and goals are placed at each end of the court. A semicircle in front of the goal is marked to delineate where only goalies are allowed to be during gameplay. Handball games are broken up into two 30-minute periods, and the winning team is the one that scores the most goals in this time.

Players can dribble the ball and touch it with any part of the body from the knee up. The player in possession of the ball must keep dribbling to avoid a violation; a violation occurs when the player’s hand leaves the ball.

Tips

Dribbling the ball down the court without passing to another player gives opposing players the opportunity to steal the ball. Players are often more successful when they pass to other players on their team as they advance down the court. Because handball can be an aggressive sport, players must use their open hand to defend the ball as they dribble it.
